How to Estimate Furniture Volume Before Booking a Dyna

The mistake that inflates moving costs most is booking a dyna smaller than your furniture, then needing a second trip late in the day, or booking a bigger truck than you need and paying for empty space. This guide gives you a simple way to estimate your own volume before booking, using a room inventory, a carton count and attention to the big items that really decide the size.

Why bedroom count is not enough

The first question many people get is how many bedrooms do you have, but bedrooms are a weak guide to volume. A two-bedroom flat a family has lived in for ten years can hold more than a three-bedroom flat a family moved into last year. A bedroom with a six-door wardrobe and big dressing table takes far more space than one with a bed and a small wardrobe.

So we combine two methods: an inventory of large items and a count of expected cartons. Photos of every room let us size the job far more accurately than any general rule.

Step one: list the large items room by room

Walk through your home with a notepad or phone and list every large item in each room. These decide volume more than anything else: beds and mattresses, wardrobes, dressing tables, sofas, dining tables and chairs, fridge, washer, bookcases, large TVs and gym equipment.

Next to each one note whether it dismantles. A dismantled wardrobe takes a fraction of its assembled space because the panels stack flat; a bed becomes flat boards. Sofas and fridges stay roughly the same size.

Step two: count the cartons

Cartons are what people underestimate, and on moving day they fill half the truck. Open wardrobes, drawers and storerooms and look at what is inside: clothes, shoes, crockery, books, toys, bathroom items, linens and stored things.

A useful rule of thumb: the kitchen alone produces many small cartons, every full wardrobe produces several large ones, and a full bookcase needs lots of small cartons because books are heavy. Estimate each room and add them up.

WhatsApp your inventory and room photos and we will tell you the right dyna size and number of trips.

Step three: pieces that do not dismantle

Large items that cannot be taken apart fix the shape of the load because their space cannot be reduced: a corner sofa with fixed sections, a big multi-door fridge, a marble table with a fixed base, an antique cabinet. List them separately with rough dimensions.

More than two such pieces is a strong sign you need a bigger truck or two dynas. See moving furniture that cannot be dismantled.

Step four: the forgotten items

Some things only get remembered on the day: the roof, storeroom and balcony, bikes, barbecue gear, plastic storage boxes, spare tyres, rugs rolled behind wardrobes, empty suitcases and bulky baby items like prams and cots. Open every storage space and write down what is there.

These can add a lot of unplanned space. Decide before the move what goes and what you will get rid of, because every item you drop saves space and time.

A rough comparison table

Home and furnitureUsually needs
One room or a few itemsSmall dyna, one trip
Studio or one-bedroom, light furnitureSmall or medium dyna
Two-bedroom, average furnitureMedium enclosed dyna, usually one trip
Three-bedroom, fully furnishedMedium dyna with two trips, or two dynas
Four-bedroom or small villaTwo dynas or a larger truck
Large villaMore than one truck, sometimes two days

This is approximate; the real volume comes from your inventory and photos.

Photographing your furniture for an accurate estimate

  • Shoot each room from two angles: the doorway and the opposite corner.
  • Open big wardrobes and photograph inside so we see the clothes.
  • Photograph the kitchen with upper cupboards open.
  • Photograph the storeroom, balcony and roof.
  • Photograph special large items on their own with something that shows scale.

When two trips make sense

Two trips with one dyna suit short moves, within the same district or between neighbouring ones, when the load is a little more than one box. The second trip costs less than an extra truck and little time is lost on the road.

On long cross-city runs every extra trip means a long drive there and back and the job can run into the night. Then two trucks at once is better. Example of a long route: Al Hamdaniyah to Al Fayhaa.

When two dynas at once make sense

  • The load is clearly more than one box.
  • The two addresses are far apart.
  • You must hand back the old home the same day.
  • You want assembly finished before evening.
  • Part of the load is going to a different address or a warehouse.

Two dynas also mean a bigger crew, so the whole move takes less time.

Enclosed or open: does it change volume?

An enclosed dyna has a fixed box, so you know exactly what fits. An open truck can in theory be loaded higher, but that puts furniture at risk on the road and we do not recommend it for household goods. We always size on an enclosed box and pack it tightly.

Special cases that change the estimate

If you are moving only part of your furniture, say a bedroom set to a son's home, count only those items. If some furniture goes to storage and the rest to the new home, you may need two dynas or one truck stopping twice, which changes how the box is loaded.

A home office with lots of paper files or a big library makes weight as important as volume, because small heavy cartons fill the floor of the box quickly. In villas, do not forget the yard, the annex and the driver's or maid's room, which are often left out of the bedroom count.

How good loading reduces the space you need

The same furniture can need one box or one and a half depending on how it is loaded. Dismantled panels stack tight against the wall, mattresses stand beside them, sofas are placed so the space above and below takes light cartons, and same-sized cartons stack like bricks.

That is why dismantling matters: an assembled wardrobe carries a lot of empty space inside, flat panels take only their thickness. Likewise, empty drawers and pack cartons full, not half empty.

Common estimating mistakes

  • Sizing by bedroom count alone.
  • Forgetting or underestimating cartons.
  • Forgetting the roof, storeroom and balcony.
  • Assuming everything will dismantle, then finding pieces that do not.
  • Booking a small dyna to save money and paying for an extra trip.
  • Not mentioning special heavy items such as safes or pianos.

Declutter before you move

The easiest way to cut volume and cost is to get rid of what you do not need before booking: clothes not worn for a year, broken appliances, old furniture that will not suit the new home, and things stored for years. Donate, sell or dispose of them responsibly.

Every item you drop directly reduces the space needed. See unwanted furniture disposal cost in Jeddah.

How volume links to price

Volume sets the number of dynas or trips, one of the biggest price factors, but not the only one. Floors and lifts, dismantling and assembly, packing and distance all count. A quote built on an accurate inventory is closer to the real cost than one built on bedroom count.

Volume, floors and lifts

Volume also sets crew size and job length, especially on high floors without a lift. Average furniture on a ground floor might take two hours to load; the same on a fourth floor walk-up can take twice as long. Add the floor and lift details for both homes when you send your inventory.

In buildings with small lifts, cartons and flat panels ride the lift while sofas and mattresses go down the stairs. See measuring lifts and hallways before moving.

Estimating furniture volume: FAQs

Bedroom count is a weak guide. Photos of every room plus a carton estimate give a far more accurate size.
