Why packing matters in Al Safa
Al Safa is a densely populated north Jeddah district where most homes are flats in closely spaced residential buildings, with busy main roads such as Prince Mutaib Street and Umm Al Qura Street and quick access to the Haramain Expressway. Furniture here goes through a lot of contact points: narrow stairwells, small lifts, corridors and then the truck box. Every one is a chance for a scratch or a crack if an item is not properly wrapped.
Many Al Safa residents also put furniture into storage for a while or move in stages. Then packing has to keep out dust and damp for weeks, not just hours, so we choose materials by duration: a one-day move is packed differently from two months in a warehouse.
Materials we use and why
| Material | Use |
|---|---|
| Stretch film | First layer on sofas, mattresses and drawers; keeps dust out and doors shut |
| Bubble wrap | Glass, mirrors, ornaments and small electronics |
| Moving blankets | Outer layer on wood and large appliances against knocks and rubbing |
| Corrugated board and corners | Table edges, mirrors and picture frames |
| Cartons in several sizes | Small for books and crockery, large for clothes and cushions |
| Bags and labels | Screws, small parts and room numbering |

Sofas and seating: at least two layers
Fabric sofas get stretch film first against dust and stains, then a moving blanket against impact. Leather is different: we do not seal it tightly in plastic for long in the heat because it needs to breathe, so it gets a cloth or paper layer, then a blanket, with film only on the outside where needed.
Wooden or metal legs are removed where possible and wrapped separately, as they break first. Cushions go into large clean bags marked with the sofa name, and corner sofas are separated into sections and wrapped one by one.
Mattresses and beds
Mattresses get dirty or torn easily on stairs and against walls. We use a fitted mattress bag or wrap them fully in stretch film and carry them upright. For storage we allow some ventilation and never lay them directly on the floor.
Bed frames are dismantled, long rails taped together and blanket-wrapped, and screws bagged and taped to the headboard. Upholstered headboards are treated like sofas: film first, then a blanket.
Wardrobes and dressing tables
Small wardrobes can travel assembled once drawers are empty and doors are filmed shut. Large wardrobes are dismantled, panels blanket-wrapped and stacked upright with corner guards. Glass or mirrored doors are removed and bubble-wrapped, then boxed in board.
Dressing-table mirrors always come off and are wrapped separately with two layers of bubble wrap and board on both faces, clearly marked GLASS. Perfume and bottles are removed from drawers before the move.
The kitchen takes longest
Kitchens hold the most small, fragile items: plates, cups, glasses, glass cookware and small appliances. Plates are wrapped one by one and packed upright in small strong cartons, which is how they resist pressure best. Glasses are stuffed with paper and wrapped outside.
Small appliances go back into their original boxes if you kept them. Open spices and tins are best used up or carried in your car. See packing the kitchen and pantry for more.
Large appliances
Fridges are emptied and dried, doors secured with tape and film, and wrapped in blankets on all sides. Washers are drained, drums secured and blanket-wrapped. TVs go in their original box or between rigid boards with bubble wrap, always upright.
After a technician removes split AC units, indoor and outdoor units are wrapped separately and pipe ends are capped against dust. Avoid laying fridges on their side whenever possible.
Ornaments, glassware and art
Each ornament is bubble-wrapped and boxed with crumpled paper so nothing shifts. Frames get corner guards, bubble wrap and a board over the glass. Large valuable paintings may need a wooden crate.
Large glass panels such as table tops always travel on edge, never flat under other items. See custom wooden crating costs to know when a crate is worth it.
Clothes, linens and rugs
Hanging clothes can go in wardrobe cartons with a rail, or be folded into large light cartons. Seasonal clothes, blankets and bedding go into sealed bags inside cartons to protect against humidity, especially for storage.
Rugs are cleaned, rolled and filmed, never folded. Curtains are folded once taken down and bagged with their numbered tracks.
Labelling so nothing gets lost
Every room gets a number or colour. Each carton carries the room number, a short contents note, FRAGILE where needed and an arrow for this-way-up. Dismantled pieces share the room number, and screws go in numbered bags taped to the piece.
At the new home we put each room number on its door so every mover knows where to go. Carton counts per room go on the inventory sheet, which you check with us. More in colour-coding boxes by room.

Full or partial packing?
Full packing means we prepare everything, cartons, small items, kitchen and clothes as well as large furniture. It suits people short on time, families moving with children, and anyone storing furniture for a while.
Partial packing means we wrap large and fragile items only and you pack small cartons yourself. It costs less but means starting a few days early. The quote spells out exactly what each option covers.
Fine wood and lacquered pieces
Lacquered wood and glossy surfaces, such as pianos and formal dining tables, mark easily, and direct pressure from tape or rope can leave permanent traces. Tape never touches the surface itself, only the wrapping, and we start with soft paper or clean cloth under the blanket.
Big tables have their legs removed where possible, the top protected with board on both sides and carried on its strongest edge. Antiques or pieces of special value are discussed with you first and can be photographed before packing.
Packing for storage
For a warehouse stay we add layers against dust and damp, avoid sealing wood and leather tightly in plastic so moisture is not trapped, raise items off the floor and stack so things you may need are at the front.
See furniture storage in Jeddah for the difference between standard and climate-controlled storage units.

Packing in Al Safa buildings
Corridors are often narrow, lifts small and stair turns tight, so packing depends on the exit route. A piece going down the stairs needs stronger corner and edge protection than one riding in the lift. We add corner guards to tables and wardrobes, wrap chair legs and double-cover glossy surfaces.
We protect the building too: the lift floor is covered, board goes on walls at turns, and no film or tape is left in the corridors afterwards.
Unpacking and waste removal
Unpacking matters as much as packing. We start with items that need assembling, beds, wardrobes and sofas, and leave cartons in their rooms for you to open in your own order. Film and blankets come off carefully so blades never scratch surfaces.
We then collect large plastic and cardboard and take it away as agreed, instead of leaving it piled in the flat or beside the building.
