Packer wrapping a sofa and wooden furniture with covers and stretch film in a home in Al Asalah, Jeddah

Why packing is part of the move, not an extra

Most furniture damage in a move does not come from a major accident. It comes from small repeated rubbing: a table edge scuffing the back of a cabinet, a sofa picking up dust and moisture, glass shifting between two pieces. Good packing is what prevents these small things.

This page explains how we pack home furniture in Al Asalah, which materials we use for each type of item, and when partial packing is enough. Al Ostoura is a furniture moving company in Jeddah covering every district, with the details on the home page.

Who needs full packing and who can do with partial

Full packing suits villas and homes with valuable or numerous furniture, a short window before handover, a long-distance move or temporary storage. Partial packing suits people who prefer to pack small items themselves and leave us the large furniture and glass.

We discuss this choice when you request a quote, and state in writing what we will wrap and what you will handle.

Timber and glossy surfaces

Wooden furniture and glossy finishes scratch easily. We cover them with soft fabric or foam and secure it with tape that does not mark, and add extra protection to corners and edges. We never apply strong adhesive tape directly to painted or varnished surfaces.

If the furniture is freshly polished or painted, tell us so we limit contact and load it later.

Send photos of your Al Asalah rooms on WhatsApp and we will set the packing plan.

Sofas, mattresses and soft furnishings

Sofas and mattresses are exposed to dust, humidity and stains, so we wrap them in stretch film or dedicated covers over the whole piece and add protection for legs and corners. We carry them so they do not bend or take pressure that damages the internal frame.

For light-coloured fabric we suggest double wrapping, and for leather we avoid plastic that sticks to the surface in high heat.

Glass, mirrors and delicate surfaces

Glass and mirrors need layered packing: paper or foam against the glass, then bubble wrap, then rigid protection on the edges, carried upright. Fragile items are clearly marked so the crew knows they need care.

For large glass tables we separate the glass from the base where possible and wrap each part on its own.

Crockery, dishes and keepsakes

We wrap each item in paper and arrange them in suitable cartons, heavy ones at the bottom and light ones on top, filling gaps so nothing moves. Each carton is labelled with its contents and the room it belongs to.

For valuable keepsakes and ornaments we recommend extra layers and, if possible, carrying them yourself.

The kitchen: the room with the most detail

The kitchen takes longer because it holds many small and varied items: pots, plates, small appliances and spices. We sort with you what goes and what stays, pack small appliances in original boxes where they exist, and keep glass separate from metal.

We prefer that perishable and liquid food is cleared before packing.

Bedrooms and clothing

We wrap mattresses and bed frames and put clothes in boxes or dedicated bags; hanging clothes can move in wardrobe boxes that keep their shape. Wardrobe drawers are emptied of heavy or fragile items before wrapping.

If you have a bedroom set of many parts, we number the pieces so we can rebuild it easily at the new address.

Children’s rooms and toys

Children’s furniture needs protection for sharp corners and coloured surfaces. We wrap beds and small desks and gather toys into closed, labelled boxes. We suggest you keep with you what the child needs on the first day: a favourite toy, clothes and hygiene items.

We advise dismantling beds with side rails and keeping their screws safe.

Appliances and electronics

Screens and electronics need shock-resistant packing and travel best in their original cartons if you still have them. Otherwise we use bubble wrap and right-sized cartons, and hold screens upright away from heavy loads.

Air conditioners, fridges and washing machines need preparation before packing and may need an installer.

Order of work: where we start

We start with rooms you use least and items you will not need in the coming days, and finish with the kitchen and the main bedroom. This lets you live normally until the last moments before the move and keeps the house from turning chaotic.

We agree with you which rooms are packed on each day when packing runs longer than one day.

Numbering boxes and recording contents

We write on each box the room name, a number and a summary of contents, and give you a list of numbers and what they hold. That list makes tracking at unloading easier and cuts search time after the move.

It helps to put a clear sticker on fragile boxes and place them where they are easy to reach.

Materials we use

We use fabric covers and foam for timber, stretch film for sofas and mattresses, bubble wrap for glass, cartons in several sizes, suitable tape and paper for crockery. Our quote lists the materials so you know what you pay for.

We match material to purpose: no thin plastic on heavy items and no weak tape on heavy cartons.

What you do and what we do

It is best that you sort your belongings and discard what you do not need before packing, and keep documents, jewellery and medicines with you. We pack furniture, appliances and crockery as agreed.

The earlier the sorting, the smaller the load and the shorter the packing time.

Packing a day or more before the move

For larger loads packing can start a day or more before moving day, so that moving day is for loading and unloading. This eases pressure on the day and lets you review what was packed.

We coordinate entry times with you and arrange work so it does not clash with family life.

Temporary storage of packed furniture

If furniture will wait for some time before unloading, packing protects it from dust and humidity, and we suggest extra covering for mattresses and sofas. We discuss with you whether the storage place is suitably dry and ventilated.

When unwrapping, you will have a chance to inspect the furniture and confirm it is sound.

Large homes and villas

In large villas packing is a project needing more time and crew, with many rooms, varied furniture, a majlis, storerooms, a roof and a garden. We divide work among the crew, assign a lead per room and track progress with a list.

For large villas we recommend a survey visit before booking to estimate time and materials accurately.

Humidity and heat in Jeddah

Jeddah’s hot, humid weather matters: tight plastic around damp furniture can trap moisture and cause odour or stains, and heat can make some covers stick to leather or glossy surfaces. We check that furniture is dry before wrapping and use breathable fabric covers on leather and timber.

If furniture will stay wrapped for several days, we suggest airing it before closing and avoiding hot, sealed spaces.

Checking packing quality before loading

After the crew finishes you can walk through large pieces and confirm that covers are fastened, corners protected and boxes sealed with strong tape and labelled. If something is not wrapped as you wish, ask at once, before loading.

This check takes minutes and saves discovering a problem after the piece is inside the vehicle.

Antiques and special pieces

Old furniture and antiques may have fragile joints or finishes that do not tolerate rubbing. We wrap them in soft layers of cloth and foam, avoid tape on the surface, assign a safe place in the vehicle and talk to you about any special notes first.

If a piece has high financial or sentimental value, we recommend photographing it before and after packing and recording its condition.

Estimating how much material you need

There is no fixed quantity, but many rooms, large furniture, glass and a kitchen full of crockery are what raise the amount of material. A small flat with limited furniture needs few cartons and some covers; a villa needs far more material and more days.

We estimate the quantity after seeing photos and tell you what you can buy yourself and what we supply.

Books and heavy items

Books, papers and metal tools are heavy and should not go in large cartons, because the box may collapse or be hard to carry. Better to use small or medium cartons, fill gaps with paper and tape the bottom with strong tape.

We prefer each box to be a weight one person can carry safely.

After packing: loading and unloading

Once packing is complete we plan loading so heavy, well-protected pieces sit at the bottom near the front, and fragile boxes where nothing presses on them. At unloading we start by opening what you need first.

We also avoid leaving wrapped pieces in direct sun after unloading and move them indoors quickly.

What affects the packing cost

Cost depends on the volume of furniture and belongings, the type of materials, whether packing is full or partial, crew size and days, and whether dismantling is added. Delicate items need extra material and time.

We give a clear written quote after seeing photos and do not add an unagreed item.

Common packing mistakes

The most common are weak materials, overloading cartons, not labelling boxes, wrapping damp furniture so odour and mould develop, and leaving fragile items unorganised. All can be avoided with simple planning.
